TOMORROW! OCTOBER 29

Learning to produce, see,
and say the (ab)normal
Professional vision in ultrasound scanning
during pregnancy

organized by the Department of Women's Studies

Kerstin Sandell
Associate Professor, Dept of Gender Studies,
Lund University, Sweden

This paper deals with midwives learning to do ultrasound scans in week 17 of pregnancy and a central aspect of that learning: seeing and communicating the (ab)normal. It is an investigation into acquiring what Charles Goodwin refers to as a 'professional vision' (1994) and into what that vision entails. One of my startingpoints is Donna Harawa's insight that "Struggles over what will count as rational accounts of the world are struggles over how to see." (Haraway 1991:194) The focus is on 'what we learn how to see' (Haraway 1991:190), or the structuring of seeing in a medical practice.

UNDERSTANDING and ADDRESSING LGBT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
organized by the Williams Institute

This training program kicks off the Williams Institute’s new initiative to train judges and other professionals on how to improve the legal system’s response to domestic violence in LGBT relationships. The two-hour training, intended for practicing attorneys, law students, judges, and other professionals, will help participants to recognize the unique obstacles that LGBT survivors confront when they turn to the legal system for assistance. National experts on LGBT domestic violence will provide participants with practical information to better understand the experience of LGBT domestic violence survivors, to assess when a person is exercising systematic power and control in a relationship, and to use domestic violence restraining orders and other forms of legal relief to help survivors achieve safety, autonomy, and justice.
