Research Scholars Program
History and Mission
CSW created the Research Scholar program in Spring of 1989 and instituted this affiliation during the 1990-1991 academic year. The Research Scholar category was created to provide a Center affiliation and title for established scholars not funded on extramural projects. The program supports local independent scholars who are conducting research on women, sexuality, or gender who have limited institutional access to research support. Research Scholars must have an active research project in progress and neither a tenure-track position nor a permanent, full-time academic affiliation with a college or university. CSW encourages affiliation from a diverse group of scholars from across the academic disciplines.
The goals of this program are to cultivate and support the scholars’ progress on their research projects. Support includes formal affiliation with CSW, library privileges, stationery, email accounts, web pages, and opportunities to participate in CSW programs, including the monthly newsletter. Research Scholars are also eligible to apply for a Tillie Olsen Research Scholar Grant, which may be used to fund: participation in scholarly conferences; travel to research sites; the purchase of specialized research materials; and/or technical services. In return, Research Scholars are expected to make timely progress on their research projects and to acknowledge the Center in any finished work (publications, films, installations, and so forth) that results from their affiliation with CSW. One goal of the Research Scholar program is the publication of research; of course, this kind of work takes time. As such, progress on a research project includes publication of an article or book, presentations at scholarly or professional conferences, advanced drafts, manuscripts or other research products under consideration by reputable entities, a substantive contribution to a university or a field of research, or similar criteria. In addition, the Center encourages Research Scholars to apply for external funding and will provide material and clerical support for extramural grants submitted through CSW.
Acceptance to this competitive program is based on the quality of the proposed research, and for renewing scholars, demonstrable progress on current research projects. In order to meet the needs of the Research Scholars and to comply with University directives, the Research Scholars program is capped at thirty participants per academic year. A Ph.D. or other terminal degree is required for new applicants.
Affiliation begins July 1. Scholars are appointed for two years with a possibility for renewal. No stipends or office space are available.
