I hope you enjoy reading the May issue of CSW Update. In it, we present a mix of articles that sample the impressive range of research by and about women at UCLA.

Betty Joseph, Associate Professor, English Department, Rice University, gave a CSW-sponsored lecture on "The Great Unread Early Modern Patriarchives and Gender Coding in a Global Frame" earlier this month. Professor Felicity Nussbaum, Department of English, UCLA, gives her assessment.

"Medieval African and European Texts about the Queen of Sheba: Some Speculations about the Early Circulation of Ethiopian Discourse" is an excerpt from a recent CSW-sponsored lecture by Wendy Belcher, a doctoral student in the Department of English and Press Manager at the UCLA Chicano Studies Center.

In her article, "When Women Ask the Questions: How Does She Do It?  And Other Queries for Women Business Leaders, " Karon Jolna, a CSW Research Scholar, uses interviews with business leaders to explore the choices and challenges facing women as they seek advancement in the world of business.

Orlan, the performance artist who uses plastic surgery as a medium of expression, recently performed at the Hammer as part of the series, On the Subject of Violence: Representation and Resistance in the Field of Vision. Sandra Ponzanesi, a Visiting Professor in the Women’s Studies Program from Utrecht University, the Netherlands, provides her impressions of the artist's presentation.

We're working on the issue for June, the last for this academic year, and starting to plan for October 2006. I hope that you'll let us know if there are people or research that should be included in upcoming issues. If you have ideas for articles, please write to me at bjg@ucla.edu
